Milford Zornes (1908-2008)

This is one of my favorite paintings by Milford Zornes. He purchased the Utah cabin that once belonged to Maynard Dixon and Edith Hamlin, and the Red Cliffs in this painting could have been painted right outside his front door. Dixon painted this view in his style, and to me it's a thrill to see both artist's visions.

I interviewed Milford Zornes several times for my film, Maynard Dixon Art and Spirit. We really hit it off, and soon I was driving to Claremont to enjoy lunches with Milford and his wife, Pat. He showed me around Claremont, including the Post Office where he had painted some murals. One afternoon, Milford and his dear friend Bill Anderson were kind enough to let me tag along with my camera on one of their weekly painting trips. It was a thrill to watch two masters sit down and lay down the landscape on blank canvas right before my eyes. (And my camera!)

Milford had a long and illustrious career. I will give more details in the weeks to come. I have video, audio and many stills. I have wonderful anecdotes about his relationship with Maynard Dixon that I wasn't able to get into the first edit of my film. I'm looking forward to sharing these with you soon.
